We’re a bit late on this one, but in case you didn’t know, here’s what’s coming for free on PS+ and Xbox Games with Gold:
- Dead Star (PS4)
- Zombi (PS4)
- I Am Alive (PS3)
- Savage Moon (PS3)
- A Virus Named Tom (PS Vita)
- Shutshimi (PS Vita)
Can we just say that Sony has been dropping the ball thus far? Apologists will say that the free games being given out at least allow us to check out games that we otherwise wouldn’t have bought. But more realistic folks will admit that this is Sony resting on their laurels, being complacent and riding high on the console lead they have.
The games on PS4 aren’t surprising. First up we have a top down space shooter in Dead Star, which would be cool if Sony hadn’t already given us a top down space shooter last month. Meanwhile, Zombi (yes, it’s really spelled that way) is a port of ZombiU, a WiiU launch game that was probably better as a WiiU game because of the motion controls and unique gamepad experience.
I Am Alive on PS3 looks like a bleak survival game that got decent reviews on Metacritic, but a closer look will see some wildly different review scores. It’s also a game that seems to have been largely ignored by everyone else. The game should’ve been renamed “The Gray”, based on its colour palette. The other PS3 game is Savage Moon, a tower defense game that I’ve never heard of, and was also released on the PSP. Meh.
The PS Vita game lineup sounds so unappealing that I’m not even going to be bothered to look them up and pretend like I know anything about them.
Verdict: April Fools!
Xbox Games With Gold
Xbox might be losing this generation’s console sales war, but it’s winning fans over with some good free game releases. This month we get:
- The Wolf Among Us (Xbox One; available April 1 – 30)
- Sunset Overdrive (Xbox One; available April 16 – May 15)
- Dead Space (Xbox 360 + BC; available April 1 – 15)
- Saints Row IV (Xbox 360 + BC; available April 16 – 30)
I love Telltale games, and I generally play through most of them when I can. But The Wolf Among Us was one that I stopped playing midway through because of its poor performance on last-gen consoles. So I’m glad that I’ve got a chance to play it to completion this time around. It’s a great noir story set in the world of Vertigo Comics’ popular Fables franchise, and is well worth playing. Midway through the month, we get Sunset Overdrive, the underrated XBox One exclusive that has you grinding, bouncing and boosting through an open world city infested with mutated humans, using zany, over-the-top weapons. It’s probably the most fun I’ve had in an open world game in the past few years.
Xbox 360 fans aren’t left in the dark, although they will get a chance to play the amazing sci-fi horror game Dead Space. Meanwhile, the 2nd half of April sees the arrival of the zany, vulgar and irreverent Saints Row IV. I played through a couple hours of that game, and it’s not for me, but the game is not without its fans.
Verdict: Another great month for Xbox owners, despite the fact that the console is faltering in sales.
