Video game music and songs you hear from your favourite music band are basically on opposite ends of the spectrum. Video game music is like an instrumental. No singing, just riffs and melodies communicating a tune! Strong melodies that have to carry emotion. Music with a lead singer is different. It’s all about the singer’s voice! Find a bare track of your favourite song and often the drum beats and guitar sound pretty bland without the voice.
Just like real life, I love rock, electric guitars and crap like that you’d find in the 80s. Cheesy sometimes? You bet! But a rocking good time! Even better….. guys remixing classic game tunes with….. more hair band metal!
Some of my Favourites
Castlevania – Bloody Tears & Vampire Killer Metal
Not the biggest Castlevania fan except for the classic Symphony of the Night. Bought it on PS1 and also XBLA!
Shinobi III – Whirlwind Metal
One my fav Genesis games. Could beat it with one life no problem on the hardest difficulty.
Axelay – Unkai Electric Guitar
This game and Contra III are possibly most favourites games on SNES.
Formula 1 – Overdrive Band
This game had the best music I’ve ever heard in a racing game (Gran Turismo 3 being second). Reading the internet, it turns out the tunes were being cranked out from an in-house band called Overdrive. A shame if these musicians disappeared because they were awesome. Pretty much all of Overdrive’s tunes were awesome. Stateside, Adrenaline Rush, Flat Out being my faves.
Sega Rally – Desert, Forest, Mountain Stages
Super hard game in the arcade, but that moving cockpit thing was wicked!
Final Fight (Sega CD) – Metro City Slums
Never had a Sega-CD, but heard this tune on the internet years ago. Creepy slummy good.
Magician Lord – First few levels
If you had a Neo-Geo at home you are both rich and a god! This game was impossible in the arcade. Even if you had $100 of quarters, no way anyone can beat this game.
Gran Turismo – Moon Over The Castle
The classic racing tune, but with a brief orchestrated intro and ending.
