I’d like to thank the GamerVets for inviting me to join their crew here to share my thoughts and insights on games and on the industry. What better way to start out my first post then to Recap the events of FanExpo Canada where I actually got to meet them for the first time.
It was M1GO who first introduced me to the Tsilon website where I became a G-List member. It was there that Evilenger and M1GO were chosen to represent the G-List in 2 of 3 spots that they had reserved for the Call of Duty tournament hosted by LG. I was the runner up. Unfortunately M1GO could not make in time and I was to replaced him in the tournament. We met at the south entrance of the Metro Convention Centre with LG members as well FanExpo staff. There I recognized the GamerVets logo printed on Evilenger’s shirt. After a short introduction we were ushered in ahead of the crowd so that we would be able to try out new LG TVs and give them some feedback on their new Dual Play feature, in which two players could play in full screen simultaneously by using a pair of 2 left eye lenses for one player and 2 right eye lenses for the other player. Each frequency would then show that players view in full screen. Unfortunately there were a few delays which let us wander around and test out Halo 4 at the Microsoft booth. When they finally got things up and running we were on our way and even had an announcer doing some play-by-play commentary for us. I made it past 2 rounds got too cocky in the last and lost it in the final minute.
Here’s the video I’ve slowly been working on over the past few weeks of my visit to FanExpo. I’m still an amateur so I didn’t know how to cut things short. So I ended up with a video nearly 10 minutes long. This isn’t even including the videos I took of the Q&A Panels of which were almost an hour long. I decided it would be too much to add and not mention most of it is really blurry because it’s zoomed in AND it doesn’t help that I just have a regular digital cam that’s 6 years old. Anyways here’s my video:
This is my 3rd year straight going to FanExpo and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. If you want to try out all the games I suggest going Thursday or Sunday as those seem to be the least crowded days and gives you a better chance at trying out everything without having to wait in a ridiculous line. Not to mention Playstation was giving out a display of a Helgast Head which ran out later that day and when I asked if there would be more they had told me that was all they were bringing. All you had to do was come play a demo of Playstation All-Stars and win. I had won neat Helgast sniper figure that was cloaking. Unfortunately I was not able to try all the games they were previewing there. I had my schedule all set up and the most important thing on Thursday for me was to go to the Q&A Panel for Stan Lee and get a Photo Op with him. Something I found out beforehand that you can order online. So if you would like to avoid wasting time lining up to buy a ticket for a photo op I suggest getting it online and use that time to roam around. Oh and back to the figure I won and the Helgast Head, There’s tons of free stuff there. EB games seems to give out those reusable bags every year and this year was a pretty nice bag. They also have raffles for give aways. Marvel always seems to give some great stuff too if you can catch their attention. I think one was a signed comic by Stan Lee.
Friday was pretty busy. I went down to walk around a bit and to check out a panel with the cast of Reviews on the Run/EP Daily. They talked a little bit about themselves and then proceeded to talk about the future of gaming. It was going good until a FanExpo staff member interrupted them and timidly said they had to wrap up soon. It was suppose to be an hour long and that’s what they had written in the schedule. OH! and neat thing to get that definitely helped me out was this app called “Guide Book.” From there you can download the FanExpoCanada Guide. The guide let’s you check the everything on the schedule or you can each genre separately. Some helpful things it gives you is a map and a list of the retailers there along with bios of the celebrities guests incase you’re wondering who they were and what they did. What really helped me was the ability save events I wanted to do and then check them in my own schedule it provided for me. So definitely I highly advise getting if you want to plan your trip and not want to carry around the booklet with you. Just make sure you have your phone fully charged. Speaking of phones, the reception in there is absolutely terrible. If you lose a friend it’s hard to find them again since you can’t just call them. I suggest meeting points if lost.
Saturday! The big day. Since I had a Deluxe Pass which is for all four days I could walk in and out as I please. I went with a friend on Saturday and he still had to purchase a ticket. We arrived there around 11am and it took him 2 hours to get inside. So be prepared to wait if you go on Saturday. The big deal about Saturday is they have all the guest Celebrities scheduled to be there. Not to mention it’s the weekend. Also there’s a Masquerade costume contest. So if you love to cosplay or just like to appreciate their work Saturday is the day to go. I did read in the paper there was a problem this year on Saturday in which people lined up for tickets for 2 hours as my friend did but then were denied access as the venue was at capacity. To add insult to injury these people also didn’t get a refund for their ticket. Very unprofessional. Luckily for me everything ran rather smoothly. I had wanted to attend the Masquerade and check out the costume contest but wanted to go out for my birthday celebration at the Real Sports Bar & Grill with some friends as well. I noticed upon exit security said they were not going to let anyone in anymore. We talked to the security there and mention that there’s a show I still want to come back for after dinner. The security guard went to talk to some one and came back and said we should be able to get back in for the show but they were closing building since the retail floor was to close at 7 and they wanted to get everyone out before letting people back in. Odd, I thought. So I figure if I get in I get in and if I don’t, oh well, What was important was going to dinner with my friends. When I came back there was no one guarding the doors so I walked on in and went down the escalators to find one security guard not letting people down the final escalator. I had told him I previously spoke to a security guard before and he said we could get back in for the show but this jerk wasn’t letting anyone through. Knowing the layout I decided, fine there’s no use arguing with this guy so I took the escalator up one floor, walked over to the elevator and took it to the bottom floor and headed to Hall G where the costume contest was being held.
If you like to bargain Sunday is the day to go if you want to get a deal on merchandise. I wasn’t able to go this year on Sunday but usually the you’ll hear retailers offering deals of 2 for one or half off. This is because they want to sell as much merchandise there so they have less to take back to their store. Not all will bargain but hey it’s worth a try. So aside from a few hiccups I had a great time this year at the expo and will be there next year, of course. Next year though I plan to do maybe a few videos trying out the games and getting peoples reactions to it. Anyways that was my experience this year at the expo.
