I had the chance to try out the Multiplayer Beta of Hawken. Hawken is a free-to-play PC game that is due to come out 12.12.12 by developer Adhesive Games. It’s a fast paced mech warrior style game that will only be a multiplayer experience. It has a training session that lets you get familiar with the game and it’s mechanics of boosting, dodging and using its jets.
The multiplayer modes in the Beta consists of Siege, Death Match (free-for-all), Team Death Match and Missile Assault which is like Domination where you capture and hold points. Siege is a game in which 2 teams try to collect as much energy from two stations on the map and return it to your base. There is one more mode in the works which is suppose to be a co-op horde mode. The game is slated to have several maps. So far the game has had about 5 that I’ve played on that are pretty big and well designed with a lot of high and low areas. I’m not certain if all of them will be available on release day as it’s coming up pretty fast but they will probably start releasing new maps over the year.
There are about a dozen different mechs to choose from and tons of customization with various parts, upgrades and paint jobs. Mechwarrior online is coming out soon too, but this game does away with the lasers and is focused more on ammunition and rockets. You will have two weapons, one of which will be swap-able but it seems the right arm is always a part of the type of mech you choose. There is also 3 items you can carry such as bombs, turrets or shields. When damaged you can heal by releasing a little robot to fix up your mech but it will leave you completely vulnerable to attacks as you are immobile and can’t fire.
Here’s some gameplay I put together with commentary
- Great visuals
- Lots of customization
- Lots of mechs
- It’s FREE
- Will have to play a long time to gain experience or buy points through micro transactions
- More info needed to explain the use of special abilities and items
- Lack of music, could use some tunes to help set the mood
The Old Guy in Me Says
It feels great to step into this fast-paced mech combat and just blow away enemies. I had a lot of fun playing it and can’t wait for the full game to release. Like most free-to-play games in order to progress and get upgrades you’ll probably have to put in a lot of hours or do some micro transaction. You can’t argue with Free though. So if you love mechs there’s no reason not to go try it. If you want to be apart of the Beta you can sign up at www.playhawken.com or click Here to go directly to the sign up.
