Like most people, Microsoft’s Spike TV revealing was a disappointment. They showed the console and controller. They showed cool TV tech, but where’s the games? They did a 180 at the E3 2013 show. Microsoft held true to their claim that it’s games, games, games as per Major Nelson (Larry Hyrb). Well, I guess he did lie a tad as they briefly talked about a new Xbox 360 model. But after that, nothing about Xbox One media features or TV.

Here’s my Microsoft E3 2013 Impressions and Review
In sequence, here’s what happened quick recap style!……
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. Fox engine. Opening cinematic world in a dusty desert. Open world. There are claims popping up on screen saying things. Or the game shows it on the screen: dynamic weather like dust storms, various transports like jeeps and tanks, day/night cycles, dynamic close quarters combat, Kiefer Sutherland voice acting, various characters, and set in African desert? Hideo Kojima came out and said a few words at the end. Looked good. Open world gameplay is awesome.
Revised Xbox 360. Yusuf Medhi came out. Looks like a small XBox One. Available now. From July 1 to Xbox One launch, Gold Members get 2 free games per month. AC 2 and Halo 3 are the starting freebies to download. Price not known. Good for late comers still eager to buy an 8 year old Xbox 360! LOL
Other 360 games coming out. Splinter Cell: Blacklist, Batman: Arkham Origins, GTA 5, FF. Victr Kislyi came ot to talk about World of Tanks 360 Edition. It’s F2P this summer on XBL. Two more games… Press Play presented Max The Curse of Brotherhood. It’s a cartoony 2d side scrolling platformer. From Software showed Dark Souls II coming March 2014.
Phil Spencer came out and said everything shown going forward is Xbox One. Lots of exclusives.
Ryse Son of Rome. Showed a cut scene with Roman warriors charging into a fight storming a beachhead. Great visuals, bloody, action game from third person view, some QTE finishing moves, animations a little jerky sometimes. Cevat Yerli from Crytek came out and discussed commanding and leading fellow soldiers. Exclusive launch title. Looked ripping good.
Killer Instinct. Improved visuals, familiar characters….. ULTRAAAA COMBOOOO! Got more cheers than anything before it! Another exclusive.
Sunset Overdrive. Ted Price from Insomniac came out to discuss a unique exclusive shooter. Open world shooter. Add more content based on cloud. More of a quirky, bright shooter with exaggerated character models. Very unique art style. Has a TF2 flare to it. Wild weapons like a gun tat shoots vinyl records and your character loading a shotgun with a can of pop! Cool but not my kind of tea shooter.
Forza 5. A nice intro about some history about McLaren was shown. Pretty obvious it’s Forza 5. The clip mentioned only 2 cars of some fancy sports car are made in the world. Seconds later it rises from the ground with smoke. Dan Greenawalt from Turn 10 discussed the game will use cloud processing for Drivatars. Drivatars learn their gameplay from real people so you can play against cpu bots that utilize human characteristics. This feature was cool.
Quantum Break. Sam Lake from Remedy Entertainment came on and discussed QB as an exclusive. The game has a time shifting element to it. The scene shown had a person stuck in time warp. Literally hovering above the ground. The main character breaks the time shifting FUBAR. It was basically a big cut scene. Meh
D4. A very brief montage of some low key game from swery65. Said it was a murder mystery game.
Project Spark. Dave McCarthy showed this exclusive game. If you like to create your own game this game is for you. Using wither controller input or Kinect voice commands, you create your own world, populate it, give it some AI and then play it as the lead character. You could make mountains, forests, day/night cycles you name it. They showed gameplay of a created world where you defend against trolls and goblins. Project Spark also showed the types of games you could make by showing a montage of snippets inspired by: Limbo, Geometry Wars and Angry Birds. Impressive demo.
Xbox Smartglass, Twitch and Uploading. A tandem showed off Ryse using smartglass integration to show off stats, friends tips and progress of the game. In the background, it scans matchmaking so you can jump into a game. The demo person jumped into a match of Killer Instinct, all while Ryse was paused. After, they continued Ryse. Using Upload Studio you can share, edit, upload videos, record commentary with Kinect, and add a skin to it to give personality. Twitch.tv is used for uploads.
No more points. Real currency. Also, XBL Gold sharing with family even if you’re not logged in. Good move.
Crimson Dragon. Exclusive. Like Panzer Dragoon. Audio hitch. No sound! Haha! An old school game. Didn’t do anything for me.
Dead Rising 3. From Capcom Vancouver. Open World Zombie Game. Gritter graphics, no load times, life like cities, craft weapons like a flashlight with pistol or sledgehammer with power saw. Call in artillery support? that was weird. Solid looking. I never played old Dead Rising games since they were so campy and bright. This game has similar gameplay, but it’s more gritty which I like. Exclusive.
Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. John Mamais from CD Projekt. Free roaming open world. Optional Kinect voice commands. Smartglass integration. Looked fantastic. Look out Bethesda!
Battlefield 4. Patrick Soderland from EA/DICE. Finally… 60 fps! They had an audio screw up which had the guy flustered. They fixed it after a minute of him standing around. They showed single player. It looks phenomenal. Is this the year I finally ditch Call of Duty for Battlefield? Maybe! SP scene showed an epic battle on a sinking naval ship. First map pack called Second Assault is a timed exclusive.
Below. A very cool rouge-like game from a small indie studio. Characters are so small you better have a big TV!
5 new studios working on games. Black Tusk in Vancouver is creating an AAA game. Microsoft showed a cinematic with a city and fireworks. Short video didn’t show much. Bleh.
Halo! The presenter tried to downplay the clip. A guy wandering the desert in a cloak, weird implosions happen, big ship comes out. It’s Master Chief under that garb! Coming 2014 from 343 industries. Bonnie Ross touted enhancements from could, 60 fps and dedicated servers.
Launching November 2013 for $500 US, 500 Euros, $429 UK. 21 markets released.
Titanfall. An exclusive shooter from Respawn Entertainment. They saved the best for last. Think of it as Call of Duty, meets Halo, meets mech warfare. Fast moving, jet pack soldiers, fast mechs. Gritty. In game demo showed big battles with foot soldiers, mechs, and air support. While you play there is a timer that shows when the next titan suit is available. Call it in and it zaps down from a ship ready to jump in. Spring 2014.
Overall, Microsoft’s E3 2013 showing was awesome to watch. A million times better than that TV demo revealing. Lots of exclusive games. Many touted as 60 fps which important for my finnicky frame rate whoring eyes! Key games for me: Titanfall, Ryse, Forza 5, Below, Battlefield 4, Witcher 3. Hell, I’ll toss in Dead Rising 3 even though I never cared for Dead Rising 1 or 2!
