Another year of gaming has passed and it’s time for the GamerVets to announce their best and worst games of 2013. It was a special year in that there was not one but two brand new consoles released around the same time and that means we were in a transition year to next generation gaming! There were still some great games to be played but we predict that next year, as developers start to utilize the full power of the Xbox One and the PlayStation 4, we can look forward to a banner year of gaming for 2014. For now, let’s look at our picks for the Best and Worst games of 2013.
Best: The Last of Us
This was an easy decision for me. By far, The Last of Us is my game of the year. Hell, it might be one of my favourite games of all time. From the graphics, gameplay, story and sheer emotional investment into it, The Last of Us is the BEST game of 2013. I even did my first ever “Let’s Play The Last of Us” and recorded each of my game sessions as I made my way and finished the game.
Worst: Aliens Colonial Marines
I am a huge, huge Aliens fan. I think I’ve seen Aliens probably 200 times and I had such high hopes for this game, until it came out. Other than the sounds of a pulse rifle, it’s pretty damn terrible. M1GO even tried his best but failed to have fun with it.
Most Annoying: Console wars and Fanboys
The fanboys came out in droves since we were in the unique year where 2 brand new consoles would be released so close together. The war between PS4 and Xbox One got old. Fast. Look at the sheer hate in the comments when Hockey Glory posted his opinion (yes, OPINION) about the Xbox One. I don’t really care for every little nuance and detail about one console over another anymore. I went for the PS4 right now because most of my friends got it so we can play multiplayer games together and I’ll be getting an Xbox One early next year. That’s all I’ll say as I am too busy having fun and playing games to argue back and forth.
Best: The Last of Us
We saw a lot of great games come out this year, and while that normally means it would be difficult to select a “best of”, there was one game that stood fungus-infected heads-and-shoulders above the rest: The Last of Us.
With it’s blend of tense, stealthy gameplay, stunning graphics, complex characters, good story, and interesting online multiplayer, this is a game that will be the yardstick for what a complete AAA title should be. I normally even lament the Uncharted games for their less-than-stellar shooting mechanics, but it totally works for this game, and helps up the tension level.
Worst: Aliens: Colonial Marines
To be honest, I actually forgot that this game came out this year, despite the fact that I bought and reviewed this travesty. Where to start… Pick one: the subpar graphics; the terrible story; the incompetent AI; the inane dialogue; the uninspired, linear level design; the annoying glitches; the unsatisfying gameplay; the lack of respect for canon; the cliche characters who were pretty much just ripoffs of characters in James Cameron’s Aliens; the fucking blind alien level; all the WTF moments this game provided.
About the only thing they did right was the sound. I had to turn my review into a drinking game because it was just such a terrible game.
Most Disappointing: Gears of War: Judgment
I really really wanted to like this game. I forced myself to play it, had fun, and even gave it a good review. However, it lacked that oomph that other Gears of War games had and seemed more like a way to cash in on the franchise rather than create something as engrossing as the original trio.
Some questionable decisions, especially in the multiplayer side of things, made it more accessible to noobs but also alienated a lot of the die-hard fans. And even the single player focus on Baird is a bit awkward after relying so heavily on Marcus and Dom in the past.
The bar was set high, and this game just roadie-ran right into it.
And fuck those stim grenades.
